Autumn Splash: Milk pods in a magical autumn light

milk pods in magical autumn light

The common Milkweed (Asclepias Syriaca) is a weed found on the side of the roads in many areas of Northern America. They are known and appreciated as medicinal plants and for other uses. For me though they have an esthetic value – I just think they are simply beautiful. When green, the milk pods get almost unnoticeable as they blend into the fields of weeds. In the fall and winter is another story. When they become dry, they open and let out colorful seeds. It is like an autumn splash…

This below is a close-up on a silky milk pod catching the last rays of light before the sunset, at the beautiful golden hour.

What is even nicer is that these seeds have white silky “umbrellas” attached to them. Similar to Dandelion’s seeds, these delicate umbrellas allow them to fly with the wind.

The contrast between the silky white, dark red and brown/copper nuances is of a great beauty. Even more beautiful they are when you see them on a blue sky background in the sunlight.
